Two goals from Belfast Giants player-coach Derrick Walser put them in pole position as they take a 4-2 advantage to Kirkcaldy for Sunday's play-off quarter final second leg.

It was a tight affair as both teams made a cagey start to their quarter final tie, but it was the Flyers that were ahead after the first period through an unassisted Sebastien Thinel goal.

The Giants didn’t let that lie and took the opportunity to turn the game in their favour within 48 second period seconds as Steve Saviano and Chris Higgins struck quickly.

Derrick Walser added a third for the home side with four to go in the middle period to increase the lead to two and make things difficult for the visitors.

However Chase Schaber was on target early in the third to reduce the arrears to two to keep the Flyers in it.

But the Giants reopened the two-goal lead as Walser scored his second of the night to put them into a good position at half time of this last eight clash.

In six meetings between the two sides this season, the home side has emerged victorious on each occasion.

The Flyers drew first blood with a 5-2 Challenge Cup victory at the Fife Ice Arena on September 3rd, but Belfast were quick to respond; bouncing back with a 4-2 win at The SSE Arena seven days later.

In the Elite League, the Giants claimed the early bragging rights with a 4-0 victory on November 11th with the Flyers battling to a 3-2 win in overtime during their next meeting in Kirkcaldy.

A wild 9-5 shootout ended in the Flyers favour on February 12th before the season series wrapped up in the Northern Irish capital with a 7-2 win for the Giants.
