The Flyers Show

A new hockey night is being launched by Fife Flyers and the Fife Free Press.

The Hockey Show makes its debut at Styx, Kirkcaldy, on Wednesday, November 20th – and the plan is to make it a regular part of the season.

The night will be hosted by broadcaster Ali McLaren, who hosts the club’s Flyers Live chats on Facebook, Allan Crow, editor of the Fife Free Press – and Flyers’ forward Bari Mckenzie .

And the emphasis is firmly on a fun and entertaining evening.

The show will feature a number of players on stage talking about their careers and their lives – and Bari teasing a few dressing-room anecdotes from them as well.

They will also be put on the spot with a quick-fire round of questions ... and there are a few surprises up our sleeves too!

The Hockey Show is a joint initiative between Fife Flyers and the Fife Free Press, and it aims to strengthen the off-ice engagement between the fans and players.

Ali said: “ Flyers have a great hockey community and I’ve been wanting to find new ways to get the players and fans together. Flyers Live is a great online show but there’s nothing better than getting everyone in the same room and having a proper conversation.

“Allan and I are the hosts but we want everyone to be involved. We want to see the real personalities of the guys we see on the ice each weekend”

Allan added: “A night of ice hockey chat sounds good to me!

“I know the fans always love to hear more about the players, and these sort of informal, relaxed events always go down well.

“It’ll be a pleasure to sit on stage and chew the fat about great games, and the characters they have encountered during their careers.”

Tickets go on sale this weekend priced just £5 for the pilot show.

They are available from Flyers ticket booth at the game versus Dundee Stars on Sunday evening.

They can also be purchased from Flyers’ ticket paybox Monday-Friday between 2:00pm and 6:00pm

The show is open to over-16s only and will start at 7:45pm.

Mike Cazzola October player of the month

As Flyers entered the month of November they done so in style with an emphatic 5-1 victory over the defending play-off champions, the Cardiff Devils. It followed a disappointing month in October which saw Todd Dutiaume's side pick up 1 win in 10 games.

Despite the disappointing run there were a number of players who stood out.

October's player of the month vote was extremely close, however 28 year-old Canadian forward Mike Cazzola is the deserving winner of the accolade.

Cazzola scored 4 goals and 3 assists during the month of October, and a 50.2% face-off percentage win.

The stats are just a small part that has saw Cazzola pick up October's award, his work ethic and determination never fails to be overlooked by the Flyers fans.

Dundee Stars

This weekend sees the Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, continue their Challenge Cup campaign with an away trip to Glasgow Clan on Saturday, before hosting Dundee Stars at Fife Ice Arena on Sunday with a new face-off time of 5:30pm

Todd Dutiaume's side make their first trip to Braehead arena on Saturday as the Clan return home ice after 5 weeks on the road. Speaking ahead of this weekend's games, head coach Todd Dutiaume had the following to say.

Flyers go into Saturday's game without the fans' player of the month, Danick Gauthier, who was earlier this week handed a 1 game suspension for a slew footing incident vs Belfast Giants last Sunday.

"We know going into Glasgow this weekend they are going to be excited for their home opener, but we would certainly like to repay the favour they gave us on opening night.

"It's going to be 2 teams playing great hockey, and a rivalry that speaks for itself, this game has the makings of a good hockey game."

On Sunday, Dundee Stars visit Fife Ice Arena for the first time this season, and with the Flyers having already recorded a win over Omar Pacha's side in the Challenge Cup, Dutiaume is looking to seal another win, this time on home ice.

"Dundee are a fast, offensive, dangerous hockey club. If we play on the outside like they are going to want us too, or turnover pucks, they have a very good transition game that they can punish with.

"We will need to be patient, play hard and be prepared to go and get the puck, just like the little things we done up in Dundee that made us successful."

CHUCK-A-PUCK

Grab your McDonald's chuck-a-puck from sellers on game night to be in with a chance of winning £250, or McDonald's vouchers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Pucks are available for just £1 and the competition takes place between periods 2 and 3!

Fife Flyers game preview

This Sunday sees the Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, welcome the defending Elite Ice Hockey League champions, the Belfast Giants to Fife Ice Arena for the first time for this season as they go head to head in Challenge Cup action.

Flyers will play Adam Keefe's side for the 2nd time in 24 hours having made the journey over the Irish Sea for the clubs away challenge cup tie in Belfast.

Last weekend Todd Dutiaume's side split the weekend with a comfortable 6-3 home win over the Coventry Blaze, before going down 4-2 at the Guildford Flames.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's games head coach Todd Dutiaume said "The boys look good and we feel good about the upcoming weekend. We know we are going to have to tie up a few loose ends and upgrade our pace level.

"Belfast are doing well in the Champions Hockey League and they are an incredibly deep and well drilled team, so we are going to have to be at our best this weekend.

"The video we have seen on Belfast in the CHL and the domestic campaign, show they have the making of an impressive team that looks like it is going to be challenging for the top of the table. It is a great challenge for us and a great benchmark for us as a group.

"Travelling on Saturday on these longer trips can have it's setback, as it means we are the team travelling twice, we also get back in the early hours of Sunday morning. Those are challenges most team will face, but we are not going to use this as an excuse, it is an obstacle we'll just have to overcome."

Abertay University and Fife Flyers secure sponsorship

A top Fife Flyers hockey star is to benefit from Abertay University’s academic opportunities and sports science expertise as part of an exciting partnership agreement.

Netminder Adam Morrison, who signed for the Flyers last month, will combine playing with studying.

Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, have an ongoing arrangement with Abertay which also gives sports and business students the chance to gain real-life work experience through a series of placements and collaborative marketing projects.

Last season Flyers welcomed two international players, Joe Basaraba and Evan Stoflet onto degree courses, and Abertay sponsored both of them over the course of the coming season.

This season, Morrison has enrolled on Abertay’s BSc (Hons) Psychology course.

He said: “I’ve always been intrigued by how our minds operate and the prospect of studying why we behave the way we do, or believe what we believe.”

He added that having the option to combine playing and studying was a big draw to him when choosing to join Fife. “I felt that with my career and how things had gone in North America I needed to start thinking about a back-up plan because I just seemed to run into injury trouble around every corner.

“After speaking with Todd and Jeff, I felt excited about the opportunity to continue my hockey career at a high level while getting started on a post hockey career or at the very least, opening up my mind to a new experience at university.

“Fife felt like a very good fit because of the location, the history, and the loyalty. I had spoken with a few former players and they had high praise about the organisation and since being here I’ve seen that first-hand.”

Andrea Cameron, Dean of Abertay’s School of Applied Sciences, said: “Last season Joe and Evan were very engaged members of the Abertay community and we’re very pleased to welcome Adam to the university.

“The partnership with Fife Flyers has been fantastic, giving players the chance to study at Abertay and our students the chance to work with one of the UK’s best known ice hockey teams.”

Fife Ice Arena

Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, would like to make fans aware of a change in face-off time for a selection of games at Fife Ice Arena on Sunday's.

The following games, previously scheduled for 6:30pm, will now face-off at 5:30pm.

  • 6th October 2019 vs Dundee Stars
10th November 2019 vs Dundee Stars
1st December 2019 vs Guildford Flames
8th December 2019 vs Cardiff Devils
15th December 2019 vs Guildford Flames

Its extremely important we listen to the fans, and we have had a lot of feedback around Sunday face off times, particularly this season with so many Sunday scheduled games at home.

We hope that by bringing the face off forward to 5.30pm, this will enable and support families with young children who found the 6.30pm very difficult for them.

We appreciate all the comments we receive, and your support is invaluable to our clubs future.

Also as from next Sunday doors will open 1 hour before face off on all game nights.
