Fife Flyers game preview

This Sunday sees the Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, play their first home game of the 2019/20 Elite Ice Hockey League season as they host Tim Wallace's Nottingham Panthers at Fife Ice Arena.

Nottingham Panthers travel to Kirkcaldy to complete a Scottish double header, having played in Dundee on the Saturday night.

Last weekend Flyers went down 3-2 to Glasgow Clan at home before shutting out the Dundee Stars to secure a 2-0 away win.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's games head coach Todd Dutiaume said "It has been nice having the entire team together for the whole week, we really missed that in pre-season.

"Going into Coventry (on Saturday) is always difficult, this weekend a lot of our guys have the opportunity to face a former team-mate [Evan Bloodoff], so I am sure the competition levels will be raised even higher. Coventry look like a very good, competitive club, and with a smaller ice surface games in that building can be fast moving, so we will have to be ready to move at a quicker pace.

"We have high expectations to perform all the time, the home opener against Glasgow last week we looked out of sorts that night, and for whatever reasons we didn't bury our chances early and that made it difficult for ourselves.

"We will be looking for a much better performance at home this Sunday against Nottingham. We will really need it as this Nottingham team look like they counter very quickly and have a tremendous amount of skill on that team. Nottingham always produce a very competitive club so we will need to be on our best, but we are looking forward to getting a home win under our belts."

The full Flyers squad have been together for just over a week now and Dutiaume said that morale is equally as important on the ice as it is off the ice. "We do a lot of team building things together with the guys, as well as make sure that they all settle into their places and are happy. The other day we took the opportunity to do play hickory golf, it is these types of things that get these guys closer as a group and want to play for each other."

Glasgow Clan

Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes Benz, will go in to this weekend's opening fixtures with a full squad available to choose from after the arrival of Paul and Tim Crowder, Danick Gauthier and Dylan Quaile from Australia.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's opening Challenge Cup game against the Glasgow Clan, Todd Dutiaume confirmed, "We had 2 guys arrive on Wednesday morning and we have had the other 2 guys arrive in this morning (Thursday), so it looks like we will have a full squad available for this weekend."

Flyers face off against one of their biggest rivals in the Glasgow Clan and Dutiaume is excited about facing Zack Fitzgerald's side on Saturday, before travelling over the River Tay to take on Omar Pacha's Dundee Stars on Sunday. "The games against our local rivals produce some of the greatest atmospheres in our building.

"The rivalry between Glasgow and Fife has escalated, and there certainly is a buzz when both teams are playing each other and there is no better home opener for us.

"Preparations for the weekend have gone well, the guys have really been looking forward to getting the rest of their teammates in, and Jeff and I will get a first look at the entire squad tonight (Thursday), with a quick tune up on Friday.

"Going into Dundee is always a challenge for any team, and this season they seem to be well rounded, fast and explosive offensively, and we will have to be at our best.

"It is good to see all Scottish teams can put competitive teams together and go out and have a chance of winning each night."

Fife Flyers vs Herlev Eagles

This weekend sees the Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, return to pre-season action at Fife Ice Arena ahead of the 2019/20 Elite Ice Hockey League campaign.

This weekend Flyers host German DEL2 side EV Landshut in a home double header on Saturday and Sunday.

Landshut are based in Bavaria, Germany and currently play in DEL2 having won promotion from Oberliga, the third level of ice hockey in Germany, last season. The team was founded in 1948 as Eislaufverein Landshut. Landshut play their home games at the Eisstadion am Gutenbergweg , where they have played since 1957. The arena has a capacity of 6,750.

Speaking ahead of this weekend's pre-season double header, head coach Todd Dutiaume said "Preparations for this weekend have gone well, the guys are upbeat and getting to know each other. I am excited to take on a stronger challenge and see what the guys can do.

"Last weekend was a pretty successful weekend. We got a good look at the guys, and got a good look at the young guys. We saw there were some conditioning issues, but that is to be accepted in the first week on the ice together. I am hoping to see an improvement weekend and more possesion on the puck.

"I liked the size and mobility of our defence, our offensive firepower has never been in question. It will be good to get Adam Morrison a little bit more time at the back end, and to see how they are gelling this weekend."

Flyers were without brothers Paul and Tim Crowder, as well as Dylan Qualie and Danick Gauthier last weekend. Now with the Crowder brothers and Quaile's season now over in the Australian Ice Hockey League, Dutiaume has confirmed that the club are working to get the guys over for this weekend but is not in a position to confirm if they will be in on time for this weekend.

"The logistics of getting players over from Australia compared to North America are trickier. We are trying our best to get the guys in on time but if that doesn't happen they will certainly be in on time for the first challenge cup games."

Grab your McDonald's chuck-a-puck from sellers on game night to be in with a chance of winning a CASH PRIZE of £250, or McDonald's vouchers on both Saturday and Sunday this week.

Maximilian Forster, Forward

German forward Forster was Landshut's top points scorer for the last 2 seasons. Laste year Forster tallied 25 regular season goals and 37 assists, before adding a further 13 playoff goals and 7 assists. Forster heads into his 7th season with the German side

Martyn Simpson

Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes Benz, can confirm that young Kirkcaldy born defenceman Marty Simpson has signed on a 2-way deal with the Murrayfield Racers for the 2019/20 season.

Simpson, 21, is a product of the Fife junior system, joined the Murrayfield Racers this season after spending the last 4 years with the Kirkcaldy Kestrels in the SNL. Simpson has iced in the Scottish National League 62 times, scoring 19 goals and 34 assists.

Assistant coach Jeff Hutchins said "We think Marty has the potential to make our team as a first team player, however we think it is important for him to continue to evolve as a pro and work on his conditioning. Marty will train with us when he doesn’t have commitments to Murrayfield."

Racers director, Willie Dunn, says the Edinburgh based club are happy that Simpson has been given the opportunity to play for the Flyers.

“Marty remains our player, but this is good experience for him and we wish him well for the game,” he said. “Being in an EIHL environment can only help his development and we’ll hopefully benefit when he puts on a Racers shirt against Dundee Comets on Sunday.”

Also joining Fife for on try-out for the 2019/20 pre-season campaign is Finnish netminder Toni Tammi, who will provide injury cover should the need arise.
