Fife Flyers most experience Elite League player has had his say on the 8-3 defeat to Edinburgh Capitals last Sunday. Flyers versatile forward Danny Stewart said that after the performance the team put in on Saturday night against Cardiff Devils, the humiliating defeat was a complete surprise on Sunday at Murrayfield, but now the team mean business when they meet again on Saturday.
“Before the Edinburgh game we felt a bit better about ourselves I think. We competed hard against Cardiff and with a bounce or 2 we played well enough to put ourselves in a position to win. We came up a bit short [against Cardiff] which is never fun [losing], but we gave it everything we had and that’s all us players can do.”
“After the game at Murrayfield, it was a different story. The changing room was very quiet and there was a lot of soul searching going on. We had a rough night from top to bottom, and night we will need to learn from and then forget about as soon as possible. We were sloppy in every area; we look tired and made a lot of mental errors. Probably the most disappointing thing for us is that we didn’t leave it on the ice. I don’t think we battled like we can, and that is unacceptable.
“It is one thing to make mistakes or not bet at your best, but we should never get outworked and that is the mindset we have to have.” Stewart remarked.
Now the focus turns to taking revenge on Saturday when Edinburgh visit Fife Ice Arena on Saturday, which Flyers players, and fans, will somewhat help make up for the humiliating defeat to their bitter rivals.
“How will Sunday’s lose motivate us? Well time will tell. The fortunate thing is that we get to play Edinburgh again on Saturday. You learn a lot about the people and their character when you go through adversity and that is definitely what we are doing right now.
“Sunday night was a huge loss low for everybody and maybe a career low for me. If guys can’t get motivated after being embarrassed on Sunday then we will really have to take a good look in the mirror.
“Edinburgh on Saturday becomes a war for us, we have one game, we got embarrassed last weekend and we need to show up ready to compete our butts off for 60 minutes and play a simple and more physical game then we did Sunday.” Stewart exclaimed.
