Fife Flyers player/coach Todd Dutiaume was left despondent after another disappointing weekend which saw Flyers go down 4-2 to rivals Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday evening, and then losing 5-1 away to Cardiff Devils on Sunday. Despite another 2 defeats he remains positive things can be turned around with the expected announcement of 1 further signing this week.
“We identified the game against Edinburgh on Saturday as a game we should have taken points from; we have been playing well recently and had a good build up all week to the game. The problem was that we came out flat and had given a lot of pucks away, and that was something that we had eliminated in recent weeks but it crept back in on Saturday.
“Morale takes a dip, especially when we considered this a game where we were targeting the 2 points. We are not used to losing and this is a real challenge.”
Despite another home defeat one positive to come from the defeat was that of the performance of young Brit, Stephen Gunn who got 2 goals on the night to take his goal tally to 4 for the season. Flyers were outshot again 27 – 18 but with Stephen Gunn and Steven McAlpine starting to find their feet in the Rapid Solicitors Elite Ice Hockey League, Dutiaume expects both players to start generate more offense and getting shots on goals. “Gunny and Hamish have put in a lot of work over the past year and have really built up their physique. Gunny’s fitness had, in the past, always been a knock against him, but he has really stepped things up and is seeing the rewards. You can clearly see that both the guys have physically grown as well, as a result of their hard work.
“I hope that Gunny and Hamish can help out and start generating more offense for us now that they have seemed to have found their feet at this level. We can’t rely on our imports just to get us opportunities.”
Sunday night in Cardiff, Fife Flyers captain Danny Stewart did not return for the 3rd period due to an ongoing ankle injury, Danny confirmed. “I have been playing through an ankle injury for the last 4 games and it just got too much. I tweaked it a couple of times on Sunday and I am going to get it looked at.” Further updates will be provided when they are available.
Fife Flyers return to Fife Ice Arena this weekend on Sunday evening when they take on the newly formed Braehead Clan, face-off 6:30pm.
