Todd Dutiaume

Fife Flyers added to their roster last week with the return of young British forwards Jordan Buesa and Chad Smith, as well as the new addition of Birmingham born defenceman Sam Jones.

Buesa enters his 2nd season under Todd Dutiaume having made the switch last season to Fife having previously iced with the Braehead Clan the 2 seasons prior to that. In 2018 Buesa, was a member of the Team GB under 18's who secured Gold in Tallin, Estonia.

The 19-year-old played in 45 games for the Flyers last season, scoring 3 goals & 1 assist. In April 2019 Buesa also played on the GB U20 side at the World Junior Championships where he scored 5 goals & 2 assists from 5 games on the way to winning a bronze medal alongside returning Flyers forward Chad Smith.

Chad Smith was named an alternate captain at this years Under 20's world championships in Estonia. The Kirkcaldy native first joined the Flyers back in 2017/18, making this his third season with the club. Last season Smith played in 54 games for the Flyers, 2 for the Kirkcaldy Kestrels (SNL) and was part of the GB U20 team at the World Junior Championships, where he scored 3 goals and 2 assists from 5 games picking up a bronze medal.

Head coach Todd Dutiaume is pleased to have secured both their services for the season ahead. "It was important to ensure that we retained both Jordan and Chad for the upcoming season. Continuing their development is crucial and a summer of intense workouts will transfer into more ice time in the EIHL. They are both good team guys and well liked in the dressing room.

"Playing and competing in the Elite League will be crucial to a potential call up in the future to the GB senior squad. Off ice it is of the upmost importance that they work harder than ever in the upcoming years. Playing for GB at any level is an incredible honour and the boys should be very proud of their accomplishments so far."

Joining Jordan and Chad this season is 21 year old British defenceman Sam Jones, who last season iced with the Swindon Wildcats in the NIHL 1. Jones iced in 38 of Swindon's 42 league games scoring 15 goals and 15 assists on the way to helping Aaron Nell's side to the NIHL South 1 league title.

Speaking of the new arrival Dutiaume said the following about Jones, "Jeff (Hutchins, assistant coach) was initially contacted by a former coach that believed Sam has the ingredients to be successful in this league. After inquiring and much discussion the decision was made to bring him in once we knew a few of our Brits had decided to move down south.

"We will allow Sam to adjust to the pace of our league in training camp and early in the season. We believe he is capable of logging minutes on a regular basis."

Chad Smith

Great Britain under 20 alternate captain Chad Smith will be returning to Kirkcaldy for the 2019/20 season.

The 5’9, 20-year-old Kirkcaldy native first joined the Flyers back in 2017/18, making this his third season with the club. Last season Smith played in 54 games for the Flyers, 2 for the Kirkcaldy Kestrels (SNL) and was part of the GB U20 team at the World Junior Championships, where he scored 3 goals and 2 assists from 5 games.

Chad had the following to say on re-signing for his hometown club “I’m really excited to be back for another season with the Flyers. It felt like the right decision for me and too good an opportunity to pass up. I’ve felt myself progress a lot over the past few years and hopefully that will continue.

Fife is home for me, so to be able to play for the club I grew up watching, is amazing. Hopefully we can have another great year and get some silverware this season.”

Head Coach Todd Dutiaume added “I’m pleased that Chad has made the decision to stay on with us and to further his development. He’s a great local talent who will be a big asset to the club.

The next step is to get him into games with some real time on the ice. I discussed at length with him, during the signing process, that we would provide the support of our strength and conditioning coach, and I look forward to seeing Smitty come into camp in top form, ready to go.”

Sam Jones

Flyers can confirm the signing of 21-year-old British Defenceman Sam Jones, from NIHL 1 side Swindon Wildcats.

The big 6’2, 190lbs defenceman from Birmingham has dual British/Canadian nationality. Sam joins the Flyers following a season with Swindon Wildcats. Prior to that Sam played in the KIJHL with the Summerland Stream, and the year before with MK Lightning (EPIHL) in the 2016/17 season.

Sam started his junior career with Okanagan Hockey Academy in 2010 and remained with them for 5 seasons. Then in 2015/16 he joined the Penticton Vees and Cowichan Valley Capitals in the BCHL. Before going on to play for MK Lightning, Summerland Stream as Captain, and then the Swindon Wildcats.

Swindon Wildcats Head Coach Aaron Nell had the following to say on Sam signing in the EIHL:

“I’m delighted for Sam on signing in the Elite League and I remember talking at the start of last season about this being his goal for his first year back in the UK. Of course, we would have liked him back in Swindon next season but as a club, we pride ourselves on developing young British players, so it’s great for Sam to be the next one to make that step.

"This is the right move for Sam, after Christmas he was certainly best D man and arguably the best player in the league and at his age this is a great opportunity for him! He made a great impression on all the players and I know they are all happy for him in securing a place at the higher level.”

Sam added “I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be moving to Kirkcaldy for the upcoming season. After the 2018/19 season I was eager for a new challenge in the Elite League, and after I spoke to Jeff, I instantly had a good feeling about Fife.

"Everyone I talked to spoke highly of the stability and professionalism of the Flyers organisation, which made the move to Kirkcaldy an attractive choice. I understand it is a big step up from the NIHL to the EIHL, and I will be working hard all summer to make sure I come in as prepared as possible, to do whatever I can to prove myself, and to help the team win.

"I can’t wait to meet all the guys come August and play in front of the noisy Flyers fans.”

Assistant Coach and Director of Player Development Jeff Hutchins added “Sam is a good young talent who has had recent exposure to North American Hockey. We are looking for him to add depth to our defensive core.

"He skates well, is physical and makes good decisions with the puck. He was arguably one of the best players in the NIHL last season. I’m sure it will be an adjustment stepping in to the EIHL, however I’m confident he will adapt fairly quickly.”
